They no longer issue a booklet but rather give you an ID card.  However,  the renewal process can no longer be done in one visit.  One month before your FM3 expires, go to the Immingration office and apply for the renewal.  One month later, you must RETURN to the office to be fingerprinted and pick up your new card.

U.S. and Canadian citizens do NOT need a visa before entering Mexico. Only your passport will be needed.  ALL persons will need a Passport to re-enter the USA.

It used to be that upon entering Mexico you were given a 30 day stay.   It is now 180 days, but be sure the Immigration Official writes "180" on your FMM permit.  If he or she doesn't ASK that it be changed to 180 days.  (They could write "90").  You will pay $22.00 USD for the FMM.  If you are given a shorter stay, you may renew it at another Immigration office up to the limit of 180 days from the time you entered Mexico, BUT you will pay another $22.00 for the extention.  BUSINESS Visas are now for 180 days, instead of the previous 30 days.

If you enter Mexico by air, you can fill out the short FMM tourist form on the plane.   If you enter by land,  you will fill out the form at the check point either 29km or 35 kms from the border, and will pay there. Be sure to keep your permit.

If you plan to live in Mexico, you may request a  FM3 Visa, which is renewed every year.  There are requirements to receive an FM3 Visa.  It is simpler to request the FM3 after you are in Mexico. You may enter with an FMM and then do the paperwork here at the Immigration Office that corresponds to where you will be living.  The FM3 is simple.  You come and go from Mexico as you wish.  There is also an FM2.  However, there are more restrictions.  For example, if you are traveling by land, you must stop and report your exit from Mexico, and stop and report your entrance again when you return.  You are allowed only so many days a year out of Mexico.

Your vehicle.  When you enter Mexico you will be given (for a price of about $25.00USD) a sticker to put on your windshield.  It has an expiration date.  However, if you have an FM3 don't pay any attention to the expiration date.  Your vehicle is valid in Mexico as long as you are legal in the country.  They like you to turn the sticker in each time you leave the country and get another one when you re-enter (another $25.00).  Not everybody who lives here does that.

Cell phones in Mexico:  If you buy a cell phone here, you can NO LONGER by a chip for your phone, nor can you buy another phone card without a CURP ID.  Previously, only Mexican citizens were authorized to get a CURP.  That is no longer the case!  Even a Tourist can get a CURP registration. Take your FMM, FM3, etc along with your passport to any Registro Civil office (in the city hall), and you can get a card immediately, and at NO COST.  Take the CURP card along with a Mexican address to your phone store and they can register you.
